Songs with a double meaning

Post by MsLisa »

Have you ever heard a song you thought meant one thing and as you grew older realised you were very, VERY wrong? :D

Yeah. I'm a songwriter/singer myself and that's how i write my songs, i hide the real meaning in the song, i don't like writing songs that are too straight 'cause there's no challenge in that.

Yeah, pretty much every Death Cab for Cutie song I've heard can have multiple meanings. Plus, any Britney Spears song was much less innocent than I realized once I became an adult, haha!

Ive heard a few like that, mostly bawdy or off-color songs. I dont dare put the titles here, but one is by Bull Moose Jackson about his record of the blues and another is by Memphis Slim about a woman named Kay.
"I planted some birdseed. A bird came up. Now I dont know what to feed it." Ramblings of a retired senile mind.

It wasn't really so much an as I grew older thing as it was I begun to pay attention thing. This was with Cake by the Ocean by DNCE. I was kindly informed by an acquaintance that no, no one actually eats cake by the ocean - think again.

We are going to be friends by the white stripe - it comes across as a simple song about school friends, but it is supposedly about the evolution of the earth.

Also, I read that Spaceman by the Killers has been interpreted as a song about someone surviving a suicide attempt rather than a song about a man from space
Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming “Wow! What a Ride!” HST

I think Body by SYML can be taken that way. As I scrolled down the comment section on YouTube I was amazed by how each person got a different meaning from it.
