Use underlining, italics, or quotation marks for titles?

Some grammar rules (and embarrassing mistakes!) transcend the uniqueness of different regions and style guides. This new International Grammar section by OnlineBookClub.org ultimately identifies those rules thus providing a simple, flexible rule-set, respecting the differences between regions and style guides. You can feel free to ask general questions about spelling and grammar. You can also provide example sentences for other members to proofread and inform you of any grammar mistakes.

Re: Use underlining, italics, or quotation marks for titles?

Post by 22RBhattacharyya »

Scott,
I just submitted my first review on Yaser and Yasmeen, but I think i forgot to underline the title.
Will it be rejected?
If it is, could I send it in again corrected?

Please respond on my inbox

Thanks, Rik

Refer to MLA. I believe it's italics for titles of works/articles/what-have-you and underlining for sources: books, magazines.

I would never underline, I agree with Scott that it is archaic. I would use italics or quotation marks.

The information is okay, but i want to add that it is better to use capital letters instead of underlining a topic.

Thank you for your clear and succinct explanation of the rules, Scott. I agree with you.
However, even though I know it's wrong, I do use quotation marks around a book title when writing a review on Amazon because italics are unavailable. I notice some people use ALL CAPS, but I'm not a fan of this look.

I agree with you on this. If italics are not available, I use quotation marks. I'm also glad Scott is specific in the Review Guidelines about using italics for book titles. That should eliminate any confusion.

I have a problem using italics and bold . I put the right tabs but they don't work what could be the problem. It is greatly affecting my review
E.g. dad. That didn't work yet it has the right tabs. Am I missing something?

In your post, it looks like bold is working for you. Dad is in bold. The only thing I can think of is to make sure the box next to "Disable BBCode" is NOT checked. I hope that helps!
