Too Much Love Scenes?

Post by joanofarc2015 »

Hi romance book lovers, I am honestly not really into reading books with "erotic scenes" but I did it once for a local book club I am part of. The reading experience was weird for me to see "love making" in a view different from mine. It felt even more brutal than watching movies with such scenes. I pondered some questions while reading these types of books:

Is there such a thing as too much love scenes?
How would one evaluate love scenes written?

Hoping to here from all of you

Although I have no problem with reading about the love scenes, I do believe there can be too many in a book. I have read books where it seems that every few pages there is a sex scene. I definitely felt like it was overkill. I like a nice mix where the author tells the store and there are a decent amount of love scenes.

The biggest problem with love scenes is when they don't further the story. There are some books that quickly become just porn. I have big problem with this because I'm always taking books where ever I go. So if I can't read a book waiting in line a the bank without blushing every two seconds, I think it's time for more plot points and less naked time.

If the book is an erotic novel then I think."too much sex" isn't really a thing but when it's meant to be a regular romance then their shouldn't constantly be sex and that should be minor.

Yes, there can be too many sexual scenes in a book, which ruins my experience. I have read an amazing book that did have erotic scenes but it was well done and did not detract from the book. It showed the intensity between the characters. Honestly, some things I will skate over if the sexual experience is overshared. If sex is the premise of the book, I will give it a lower rating.

Too much love scenes certainly exist; and they're never a good thing. In real life, couples don't just jump at each other every second of the day for the rest of their lives, and that is not the only thing that bothers me with the too much love scenes. Try removing those too many love scenes from the book, what will remain then? Two characters that haven't had a proper chat with each other without jumping at each other for sex. The book will remain hollow and empty. At least, that comes from my experience of reading books with too much love scenes.

I think it depends on your genre, if you are talking traditional romance then I think it should be more hinted at than anything else but if we're talking contemporary erotic romance then you can have as many sex scenes as you like. I think the most important question to ask is do the sex scenes add to the plot or take away from it. Everything, every moment, every scene, every piece of dialogue, every sex scene needs to tell us something about our characters and where they are going. If the sex scene doesn't show you something new about your lead character, then it's just pointless smutty erotica and unless that's your genre - pure erotica - it's probably not necessary.

As much as I enjoy a good sex scene in a book there unfortunately is a thing called too much sex in a book (for me). The experience I have is that when I came across a book with too much sex it was usually also i book severly lacking in the originality of the plot, poor character development, ... It seemed as the author was trying to compensate for lacking in other aspects of the book.

But i also expect more sex in erotica novels than in pure romance novels.

For me it is also important to feel "their need" a storytelling where you can live through the characters. If that is not present any amount of sex is too much.

Quality over quantity!

As someone who writes erotica for personal enjoyment I think it is a learned skill. There is a right way and a wrong way to write a love scene. Wording and sentence structure and even the words used can make a big difference between 'thrilling, must have more, love scenes' and 'oh my god, why are they using that word? and why am I reading this can I just skip it?' love scenes. Plus, personal taste is a big player. I prefer 'flowery' language when writing romance and love scenes. Words that take my mind off the sweat and less romantic aspects of sex. Some people enjoy writing that includes the sweat and such.

I can agree a book can have too many. However, i do like it when it's done right. I think it can show the intensity between two characters.

As much as I love erotica, there can definitely be too many sex scenes. There is a fine line between enhancing the story with these scenes and completely overwhelming the reader with sex sex sex.

I have to agree with many of you! There can definitely be to many sex scenes. Don't get me wrong a good sex scene that enhances your knowledge of the character is awesome. I don't mind reading them and sometimes they can draw you further into the character. I have read several books where it's just too much. I need more in the book than just sex. I want to get to know the characters. Really find out what makes them who they are. The deeper the character the better!

I have to agree. I have to take a break from romance novels because they get old sometimes with the sex scenes.

I love reading erotica novels but that does not mean that the love scenes should overtake the whole books. There should be enough build up between the characters in order to justify a love scene taking place and I will agree with many of the opinions above that it shows the intensity of the feelings that the characters have for each other. Although if the plot is not good the love scenes won't save it.

My mom has a line about romance novels I think rings true. She says that sometimes you read the romance novel just for those scenes, and sometimes, you know when you're getting older, because you skip those parts to get to the action.
