What is the last book you read, and your rating?

I just finished reading the young readers' version of this book. As a middle grades educator, I appreciate how the deep story is told in a way young (or not so young) people can understand it. I give it a 4 out of 5.

The Neapolitan series of novels by Elena Ferrante has enjoyed considerable popular and critical acclaim, but when I read the first in the series, My Brilliant Friend, I was underwhelmed and wondered what all the fuss was about. And so, it was with only lukewarm anticipation that I commenced the second novel, The Story of a New Name, but I really enjoyed this novel so much more than the first one, and maybe Elena Ferrante (whoever she really is) is a great modern European writer after all.

The plot twists and turns, but is hardly relevant, as it merely provides a framework for an intelligent, wryly observant and beautifully written study of a set of characters and intricate relationships in Italy in the late 1960s, detailing their lives, their loves, the turbulence and the violence of a time when women were trying to rise above the status of mere chattels.

I acquired a new respect for the talents of Elena Ferrante in this novel, and I am actually awarding this novel 4.5 stars out of 5.

The most recent book I finished is "Educated" by Tara .W. The book is a memoir about a girl from Idaho who has no formal education till the age of 17, but later pursues education and obtains a Ph.d. The book is very encouraging.

I just read Mixed Blessings by J.M. Muse. It was a fictitious story but can easily be paralleled to reality. "Race" is a word that is easily thrown about these days. Through his work, the author is showing readers how people treat one another in this world. Good read. The rating was 4 out of 4 stars.

A couple more books completed today. The Blind Side of the Heart by Julia Franck, for which she won the 2007 German Book Prize, is a tale of Germany in the first half of the 20th century, mostly between the wars.

It is the tale of Helene, her sister Martha, their Aunt Fanny, their friend Leontine, and the men that impact on Helene's life.

This masterful novel documents the gradual withdrawal of the once vibrant and intelligent Helene, as she becomes an increasingly morose, silent, stoic and heroically determined woman with a strong survival instinct.

A wonderful, carefully crafted, beautifully written novel that I enjoyed immensely. 4.5 stars out of 5.


Secondly, The Dressmaker by Rosalie Ham, was embarrassingly awful. Poorly written, full of every Australiana, cliche one could possibly imagine, with a story-line that makes no sense at all, and characters that are no more than mere caricatures, the book really has few redeeming features.

The Land of Sunshine and Hell by Maxene Raices. A true story of an unwed mother from the 60s. It is well written, enjoyable, and enlightening!

My love for romance would not let me stay without finishing the book.

Problems And was disappointed with how the series ended. The first two books rock and I definitely recommend them. This book was drawn out and did more telling than showing. I gave it a 2/5 because it gave me more time
with characters I liked
