I think "Orange" looking back from a somewhat more mature place really helped to cement that,
1. You can't bottle up or try to bury your issues and,
2 That if you give up on life, you hurt those around you more than you'd ever imagine.

Berserk by Kentaro Miura definitely inspired me. Its extremely dark and tragic perspective on life also allows the contrasting weight of having hopes of change, justice and resolution in face of overwhelming odds, deaf ears and outright malice.

Its author is known for hiatuses, and the story is far from over. If that doesn't bother you, I beg you to check it.
(it has an early r*pe scene and is also set in a fictional Middle Ages, with all the cultural baggage that this entails. Just so you know.)
