A graphic novel is a full-length book that is illustrated similar to a comic book. One’s classified by this genre are typically read left to right and are produced originally in a non-Japanese format. This may be one book or a series of books, but usually can stand on its own as a novel. There is no pre-determined setting. This style novel can fall into any category and is becoming more and more popular.

Manga is a graphic novel of Japanese origin. It is a serial story in which each book builds upon the other. It is typically read up to down, then right to left. Most books include a reading map at the beginning of the novel to instruct the reader on how to read it. The books usually take place in Japan or in a fantasy-based version of it. These also tend to have a lard fan base and some have continued for several books. Pokemon, for example, has been around at least 30 years and has had several spin-off shows(kids example). Inuyasha spanned to over 100 volumes (adult example). Books like Naruto and Bleach has expanded well into 60 volumes(teen examples).

Some popular examples of Graphic Novels include:

1. Any Marvel or DC book

2. Classic adaptations such as Shakespeare

3. Dr Who

4. Percy Jackson and the Olympians

5. A few James Patterson novels

6. Walking Dead

7. Hyperbole and a half by Allie Brosh (very funny autobiography about a woman/comedian’s fight with depression and how she learned to cope with it (I know, oxymoron)

8. March: Book 1 by John Lewis (a true account of an African American man’s journey to adulthood during the Civil Rights Movement and how he played a part in it).

9. Patricia Briggs’ Moon Called Series

10. Code Name: Geronimo by Gerry Kissell: The true account of the raid on Osama Bin Ladin

11. Relish by Lucy Knisley (an account of a young woman growing up in a divorced foodie family in the 1980s) or In the Kitchen with Alain Passard by Chirophe Blain (memoir of working with a famous chef)

2. Bleach series by Tite Kubo
3. Library Wars by Hiro Arikawa (time where librarians are actually soldiers fighting for informational freedom against people who would rather control or burn books. Great action-packed sci fi series for those who like Fahrenheit 451)

4. One Piece by Eiichiro Oda (high-seas pirate adventure)

5. Fruits Basket by Natsuki Takaya
