Helllooooo fellow book lovers! It's been a while, so I hope you haven't forgotten about our author interviews! This time, it was my privilege to interview the author of Toni the Superhero, R. D. Base. This was book of the month in July 2018.

To read the official 4-star review click here.

Without further ado, let's get right down to the interview, shall we??

1. Tell us a bit about who you are and how you started writing.

I’m a mom of three wonderful boys who all love reading. I started writing when I was very young. I think I wrote my first book when I was 5 years old and I also wrote a book of poems at the age of 5. I distinctly remember my first poem “Pot full of cups.” I wrote many fictional stories which I never published. When I was a teen, I wrote my first novel – also unpublished. As an adult, I’ve written several short stories and poems that have also not been published.

I actually wrote and published this book to encourage one of my sons who started writing a book. I wanted to show him that he could write and publish his own book and the best way to do that was by example.

2. Who has been your biggest influence in your life?

My mom has been the greatest influence in my life. She’s strong, generous, kind and always joyful.

3. What is your favorite book? What was your favorite book growing up?

This is a very difficult question for me to answer because I have so many favorites! However, if I were to pick just one right now, it would be “Mindset” by Carol S. Dweck. However, this answer might be different if you ask me the same question next month!

4. Let's talk about Toni the Superhero. How did you get the idea for this story?

This story was inspired by my children. When I was teaching my kids to read, I found that one way to develop their reading confidence
was to give them the ability to read a book from beginning to end. So I decided to write my own simple books on paper which I stapled together. Each page had only a single sentence and a picture to match. In one case, I copied clip art from the web and pasted it in the book. This strategy helped develop their reading confidence and ultimately, a love for reading.

This book is basically an extension of the strategy I used to teach my children to read. The only difference is that this book is published.

5. Is Toni based on someone specific in your life?

Toni is a fictional character but I drew a lot of inspiration from my three sons.

6. Are you planning more books featuring Toni?

Yes. There will be more books featuring Toni coming out soon. In fact, the next book “Toni the Superhero Loves Vegetables” will be released in July. My goal with that book is to help kids read while inspiring them to eat their vegetables.

7. Do you have plans for any other books or any adult books?

I don’t have any plans for any adult books now, but that could change in the future.

And now for the fun questions:

8. What superhero would you want to be and why?

I would want to be Wonder Woman because she’s fierce and strong.

9. What's your favorite food?

I don’t have a favorite food, but my favorite treat is chocolate.

10. What would be your perfect vacation?

Anywhere warm, where I can relax by the beach with a good book.

Thanks so much for your time! And to all you fellow OBCers out there, stay tuned for another author interview. Same interview time. Same interview channel.

Yes! I am glad we are getting to know another author more intimately.

She started writing books at age 5! I wonder if I already knew how to read at that age. It's been so long ago I can't remember.

Thanks for this, Kandscreeley! I've been hounding this page.

It's fortunate that we're learning more about another writer. She started creating books at age 5! I wonder whether I could have read at that age. That was so long ago that I don't remember. Thank you very much, Kandscreeley! I've been back to this page several times.

We learn all there is to know about the author through the interview. It provides some insight into the foundation on which the author based her novel and her viewpoint on certain issues.

Nice and interesting review. I even got to learn how to help my little kids read - when they start coming. It's always a pleasure to get to know the authors of amazing books a bit more personally.

This was a spectacular interview. Apart from giving me an insight into the person of the author, I also got to connect with her on a different level. I thought I was the only one who did not have a favorite food, but had a favorite treat. I am glad I am not the only one.
