Does music reflect life or life reflect music?

This is the place for readers of poetry. Discuss poetry and literary art. You can also discuss music here, including lyrics. Also, you can discuss poets themselves, in addition to poetry.

In my opinion I think music reflects life. Depending on the genre, because not all music reflects life, some are just random.

I think music both shapes and reflects life. People express their feelings and experiences though music, but at the same time music inspires action in others. The way that music shapes life is not always bad though, it can inspire positive change such as female empowerment and race equality. Whether the musicians are responsible for the actions inspired by their songs is another discussion entirely, but I would say no.

I believe it goes either way. As people use life experiences to create music and then the music affects more people. Thus I think it's a cycle. Kind of like the chicken and egg question really!

Both
Music is a reflection of life
But
What you listen to ultimately has an impact on who you are.

Say a man creates and sells a narcotic that tends to induce violent outbursts and suicidal tendencies.
That's a reflection of himself.

But if someone else. Whether they already are prone towards this stuff or not. If they start taking the drug, over time it's going to change who they are.

It's the same with music. The music you absorb will reflect the heart of it's maker and affect you as a person. Listening to horror movie soundtracks while you're sleeping will give you nightmares (obviously) but will also turn your hair white in a month. Physically affecting you from just your music.

In a more personal sense, I'm vulnerable to a tendency towards depression. I can't listen to specific artists without becoming angry, sad and bitter. The change can wash over me in a few days. For someone who isn't as prone towards depression they might not notice but there's a chance that over an extended period of time, it might affect them as well.
IDK
Music has power. But the power it has comes from the creator and the listener.

I would think that music reflects life, but if you think how a good song can sometimes change your day completely, sometimes it works both ways!

I actually think that music is the representation of what we wish to have when it's a good happy music and the expression ours pains when it is a sad song.

I can resonate more with music reflecting life, i think that there is music because there is life, life came first before music

I think music reflects life. Things happen that inspire people to write music.

I think music reflect life, people sing based on life experiences they have been through.

Music reflects life. People relate well to music which reflects directly to their lives.
