Regarding dashes

Some grammar rules (and embarrassing mistakes!) transcend the uniqueness of different regions and style guides. This new International Grammar section by OnlineBookClub.org ultimately identifies those rules thus providing a simple, flexible rule-set, respecting the differences between regions and style guides. You can feel free to ask general questions about spelling and grammar. You can also provide example sentences for other members to proofread and inform you of any grammar mistakes.

Regarding dashes

Post by JSWorrilless »

Is it okay to leave space between an em dash and the previous or next word? I already did some research and in US and British English, it is never okay. But are there any variations where it is correct? If there are, when is it okay and when is it not?

Hi,

Generally, a space is not used before or after an em dash, but the AP style, used by newspapers, inserts a space before and after it. OBC does not follow a specific style guide, so technically, it is not an error to include a space—just make sure there is a space on either side of the dash.

Here are two references that mention this difference:

I agree with you, OBC does not follow a specific guilding style.
