Comma needed?

Some grammar rules (and embarrassing mistakes!) transcend the uniqueness of different regions and style guides. This new International Grammar section by OnlineBookClub.org ultimately identifies those rules thus providing a simple, flexible rule-set, respecting the differences between regions and style guides. You can feel free to ask general questions about spelling and grammar. You can also provide example sentences for other members to proofread and inform you of any grammar mistakes.

Comma needed?

Post by Lisa A Rayburn »

Should there be a comma after 'suddenly' in this sentence?

"He heard the conductor calling for everyone to board, and suddenly his body was moving toward the train on its own. "

'and suddenly' isn't an interrupting or prepositional phrase, and the sentence meaning does not stand on its own if 'and suddenly' is removed.

I've seen both ways here. I've seen it marked wrong if there isn't one. However, I don't think it's needed. So, I guess I'm not much help here. Good luck!
