Advice on Sentence Containing Commas

Post by Hunter Tester »

I figured I would ask here first before I submit my review and automatically get points taken off. Here is the sentence I am struggling with:

"The time she spent with us, and the joy that brought her, can very much be seen in this book as well."

I am not sure if I placed the commas correctly.

Hi. I am no grammar expert, but I think placing comma in this sentence is not appropriate. It should be, "The time she spent with us and the joy that brought her can very much be seen in this book as well." Btw, you can check your grammar using grammarly. This website can excellently do this job.

Grammarly is often wrong, especially regarding comma placement. Many of us no longer recommend it.

The commas definitely need to go. And you might also want to remove "very much." It's sitting there right in the middle of your nice smooth "can be seen" and sounds awkward.

Thanks for your help! I’m using scribens and grammarly, and neither noticed anything wrong with the sentence.

Thank you! I’ve been improving, but still add unnecessary commas.

Thanks so much for your feedback. I wouldn’t have noticed that on my own.

you have got a compound sentence, I believe that you should take out the first comma.
