Conflicting feedback on comma’s

Some grammar rules (and embarrassing mistakes!) transcend the uniqueness of different regions and style guides. This new International Grammar section by OnlineBookClub.org ultimately identifies those rules thus providing a simple, flexible rule-set, respecting the differences between regions and style guides. You can feel free to ask general questions about spelling and grammar. You can also provide example sentences for other members to proofread and inform you of any grammar mistakes.

I did look up comma usage rules OLBC doesn't publish their preferences. I can't find their guide and everything I've looked up refers to say is according to preferences if who is reading. My commas with or without dont change the sentence meaning. It's frustrating without some real rules.

I was taught to leave our commas if it didn't change the sentence meaning.

That sounds as good a solution as any! I've completed six reviews so far, and I'm finding that my sentences get shorter and less complex with each review I write. As you say, every comma error costs 10 points, so why risk it? If in doubt, rewrite!
This is me too. If I don’t know for sure about a comma, I will reword the sentence.
Glad to know I am not the only one :) that being said, I wish those commas did not cost the while 10 points as we only get 40 in total :)
I tend to agree with you on this. I feel the comma deductions are really an unnecessary overkill. Especially considering the total score for grammar, as you say. It would be reasonable, in my humble opinion, to deduct 10 points if there is an overall misuse of commas. But to deduct 20 points for two commas too many or too few in an entire review is just unreasonable.

There is more to commas than that... and often people don't recognize the needed pause of a comma if they don't read it aloud.
Life without a good book is something MrsCatInTheHat cannot imagine.

Thank you for suggesting Grammarly. I just received feedback on my first review and I was shocked to see that my two missed commas cost me ten points each! I’ll certainly be spending more time proofreading my next review!
