The character is human and as previously mentioned, an older man.

BONUS HINT: There are rather few classic, American, short story writers who famously employ twists. This story is one of the author's better known ones but not among his most famous.

To tell the truth I don't remember, but since almost all of this author's short stories take place in New York I will say New York.
