You would come back with the bag but not food, drink
If you take a long trek- it is always left behind but you might trek back the next year so it will be like taking half of it every year like migration.
Nope ... it isn't any kind of camping gear. More to do with camping environment.

Big ... BIG ... hint: The hiking shoes interact with the answer to the clue.

socks are important- and ankle support. I'm going off what I learned in the Army. We always had two pairs of hiking boots so we could wear a pair one day and the second pair the next day.

@María Andrea Fernández
It has nothing to do with camping actually, but more to do with HIKING to the campsite.

@Stephanie_Chapman
Not anything that you carry with you, but you are so so close ... 1) Shoes , 3) Hiking , 3) Half one way 4) it is not you or anything you are carrying on your body.

Among the clues are "shoes" and "hiking". Where do these two things meet?
{{{ ON }}} what can one use the shoes (no matter how far) only half way because the other half way is the way back?

WINNER !!!!!

Yes, a hiking trail.

1. I am something a specific type of traveler would use.
A hiker

2. No matter how much of me you use up half of me will always remain.
You can only go 1/2 way on any trial. The other half is getting back to the starting point.

3. Though I am more popular during certain seasons I can be used any time of year.
Hiking is usually done in fair weather months.

4. When a traveler uses me their choice of foods and drinks becomes important.
A hiker is limited in how much weight they can carry so they must be judicious in their choices of foods and other supplies.

Your turn Gravy

You may see me sea-side, or on any street, or even your backyard.
I serve a few seemingly dissimilar functions but they are actually the same.
I've existed for a very long time.
