To Conquer a Mountain

Post by brookee21 »

I
upon the mountaintop I did once sit
a place of peace and joy united
where voices rose in harmony endless
the echoes of people I loved flooding the atmosphere
full with bursting clarity and love and hope
upon that mountaintop the sun lit my soul
a place where connections were so omnipresent
strings connecting me to everything
the earth, the sky, the people around me
the beauty of the nature surrounding
encompassing everything I once knew
as the embodiment of the person I was, Joy
II
the next year was a time of trials and fear
and the strings that were so unbreakable
would begin to break with a steadfast speed
I became Silence, buried in my skin
unable to make a sound or leave a presence
terrified to show the world who I had become
afraid to leave my ineffective echoes
to join the echoes of the world
the strings around me snapped, left me alone
left Incapable and Inadequate
seemingly Unaccepted by nature and person
I journeyed through a man-made hell called high school
and all inside erupted, tears and fears
and Silence embraced me in wintry arms
III
the next year, Chaos overran Silence
I choked out each breath in hopes of survival
I drowned in waters I had created
any ties I once held dear were
completely and utterly Destroyed
engulfed by eternal Anxiety
and Uneasiness pressing on my lungs
Chaos was defined by passionate Anger
I was Self Loathing defined
yet fought until I was free from his grasp
escaped its clutches with my feeble life intact
Debilitated and Exhausted
IV
And so I learned to fight through the distress
I learned to accept defeat and progress through
I turned life around
I remembered the mountaintop again
I worked to reconnect those broken strings
I conquered Chaos and Silence alone
I abandoned loneliness for healing
I embraced nature and became defined by…
Love
I was ready to face any challenge
And ready to absorb any impact

I like how you personified feelings in your poem.
