Deadman’s SHIFT

Quietly sitting in the ‘deadman’s shift’
as it is called, for it is
the time when all is asleep
with only the soft ticking tocking
of a clock is heard

The night is still;
A sudden rush of refreshing cool breeze
passes through;
stillness again,
A distant barking of dogs erupts
a simultaneous slapping somewhere
close by, made an indifferent sound

followed by the rumbling of approaching
vehicles which quickly faded off
leaving the prevalent stillness
once again

Dead silence
now broken,
this time by a soft pitter patter of rain
bringing a soothing relief, it too
tapers off.

The deadman’s shift,
continues with an eerie silence
which now invites the imagination
to a midnight snack of shadows
spine chilling, nail biting uneasiness
with refreshing cold bumps to devour
you.

A persistent tick-tock
spells something sinister
a taunting sound waving the nerves
making wild the senses,
awaiting

The stillness remains deafening
with only the pronounced tick-tock
competing
until the dead man’s shift is over
where nothing happens
yet, some things happen.
