A smart, enthralling historical thriller with real attitude, this LoveReading Star Book
Heart! We will forget him!
You an I, tonight!
You may forget the warmth he gave,
I will forget the light.

When you have done, pray tell me
That I my thoughts may dim;
Haste! lest while you're lagging.
I may remember him!

This unique and fascinating historical novel is about a time and place rarely written about in English, and offers not only an exciting new perspective on California and the Andean nations, but also a clever and unusual young protagonist with an unexpected history and a personal perspective that sends his life off into unexpected directions. Also, as there must be, a little romance. Read this book! It is well worth your time.

It's quite interesting to be transported to the California gold rush, a period in history when many people quite literally wanted to attain riches overnight. It's a reminder that no matter how modern or advanced we may be, some things i.e. the desire to be rich never change.

There is no way a reader could see the title of this book and know that it was historical novel set in the time of the California gold rush. This is one of my favorite eras in US history. It's interesting that you point out that there were no clear-cut villains in the story--from what I've read of the history of these times, there were PLEANTY of bad guys! Thanks for your in-depth review.
