Verónica: A Musketeer’s Story by Jody Studdard is the story of a girl named Verónica who aspires to become the first female bullfighter in history. She comes from a family that has always dominated the bullfighting ring. Will her dreams come true? Or does fate have something different and special in store for this talented girl?

Verónica and her father have dreamed of her becoming the first-ever female bullfighter since she was young. She has dedicated all her time and hard work towards honing her skills, making sure that in this male-dominated field, nobody dares question her just because she is a girl. They have faced opposition because of her being a female. So she gains skills and talents that even the most experienced and expert bullfighters are yet to master. On the day she finally puts her skills to test, she enchants the entire audience with her performance, but during the last stunt, something goes horribly wrong. She sees something that makes her run away from the bullfighting ring and her family. What does Verónica see? How will this sudden turn of events affect her? Where will fate take her? Will all her hard work go to waste or will there be something better in store for her?

This book is so beautifully written that I couldn’t help but read it all in one sitting. Verónica’s character is so brave, innocent, and fierce. It is fascinating reading about her journey as she contemplates what she wants to do in life after she leaves her lifelong dream behind. Her independence is something I loved the most about her. She does not act like some foolish whiny girl even when all her dreams get shattered. Instead, she decides to find her way on her own. Her intelligence is demonstrated when she clears the test set by the priestess with ease. I loved her fight with Commandant Lefebvre and the bravery and skill with which she fights him is admirable. Also, she earns some very loyal and lifelong friends along the way.

There is nothing to dislike in this story except the starting chapters of the novel, where a lot of foreign terms are used, which are a bit difficult to remember. Though they didn’t bother me much because the author immediately explains their meaning in the next line. There is also a glossary at the end that will help with those words. Overall, it is an amazing book.

I would like to give this novel four out of four stars, as I couldn’t find any errors. It is exceptionally well-edited. I would recommend this book to lovers of fantasy and magic. There are no profanities or sexual content in the book, so it is suitable for readers of all ages.

Veronica seems like my type of character. I love how bold she seems. The foreign terms you mentioned might get annoying though. Thanks for a great review!

Verónica is bound to face opposition from different quarters, as she dreams of becoming something that many don't think is possible for women to become. More power to her for pursuing her dreams relentlessly and being a great role model.

This must be a really wonderful book indeed. You’ve brilliantly preserved the air of suspense I am sure the author wrapped around the story of Veronica and her daring exploits. Thank you, Raina.
