Some authors are nearly synonymous with their country, but others are not known outside of their home country and maybe a few neighboring countries.

So, which author from your country deserves a more global reputation?

Kiragu Kimuyu. I met him once during his book launch and he was honestly the sweetest thing ever. I wish everyone would read his book. It's called Drug Paradise and it's captivating, truly a work of art.

Hella S. Haasse, from the Netherlands. Quite a few of her books were translated into French and English, and I really think it's a pity that she isn't so widely known internationally (because those books are magnificent).

Horacio Quiroga from Uruguay. He was a horribly tormented soul, writing very dark stories. He was likened to Edgar Allan Poe.

However, at the same time, he wrote some of the best children's stories for his own children.

Truly a talent on his own right.

Mircea Eliade from Romania. He is already internationally known but not as much as he deserves. If you are not necessarily interested in reading something by him, try and watch the movie Domnisoara Christina, or Miss Christina in english, made after his book with the same name. You can easily find english subtitles and the movie is a real masterpiece!

Amos tutuola from Nigeria. I read 'The Palm Wine Tapper' when I was younger and I still remember it vividly now. Amos through his writings takes you on a journey to places you've never visited and makes you experience things you've never experienced.

Odysseas Elytis, from Greece. I know it's really hard for poems to evoke the same feelings in a translation, but I'd recommend to give it a shot. His poems are some of the most beautiful I've ever read.
