I can only compare other authors to myself, and I get my inspiration mostly from music. Listening to a song, hearing one absolutely random lyric can give you a brilliant idea, and I hope that this is not considered stealing! And any random thing can inspire you, actually. Any personal experience, anything you hear or see in a coffee shop or on the street.

I think that they get it from their own life experiences or experiences of those close to them. I guess some probably get them from the newspapers.

Well mostly get their ideas from their surroundings. They observe what's going on in their surroundings, sometimes there are things which inspires them to write. And sometimes there are special persons or things in their life who inspires them to write. Or sometimes it may be just their imagination

I believe authors see everything and every person as a potential story. With each new encounter, they seem to be mentally fictionalizing their experience to make it into a book.

In my opinion most authors feel relieved and happy when they see people enjoying reading their books and escaping from the distressing problems of daily life.
This gives them inspiration to keep on writing.

I feel a lot of things that inspire authors are epiphanies but once they run out of those, I guess everything, every possible thing surrounding them could be a source of inspiration.

Real life experiences, weird dreams, completely unrelated songs ... Some people add their own take to an already created story. For example, Sarah J. Maas created her A Court of Thorns and Roses series off the Beauty and the Beast tale. Some times they just warp a story and make it more interesting for their audiences.

Great question! I think it's a different thing for everyone, but I always thought it could be a need to escape reality. When writing a book, you make your own reality and you get to live in it. Not just in fantasy novels, I think it's true for books of any genre. And if you're talented enough, you get your readers to join you in your world as well.

I’m a dance teacher and I get my inspiration from a variety of different things. I use personal experience, dreams, day dreams, movies, books etc I feel like authors maybe are in the same boat?

I think many authors have a great imagination, but I also think that life circumstances motivate authors. Many times nature can also inspire authors.

Being an aspiring writer and artist I get inspiration from my experiences and those of others, my observations, things that I'm passionate about, and other literary works. But I'd support those who said it can be gotten from anything.

Mostly they start out with their own experiences, then write what they want in life, by observing people around their life. Basically whatever works for them. Some of them has told me that they even get inspiration from some of their crazy, vivid dreams.

Love of cats, needing money (Hardy boys on that one from what I read about the author), one had a favorite place they would go and they created a series from there, a love of dragons, timezones in history, games and lastly a tv show. That is where some of my authors got theirs from.
