Bram Stoker is the vampire king and Anne Rice is the queen. Stoker's Dracula is timeless and provides the foundation for every other vampire novel ever written. Anne Rice creates a rich vampiric world that readers can lose themselves in. Her characters and their lives are fascinating.

Anne Rice hands down. Her vampire Lestat is a wonderful character.

I especially liked The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova. I've also read most of the Anita Blake series by Laurell K. Hamilton and the Southern Vampire Series by Charlaine Harris. I have not read Stoker or Rice. Maybe I will someday when I have time.

I second that thought!

I personally think Anne Rice is the best author of vampire fiction. From Lestat, to the story of the Vampire Queen, to the two red-haired witches, I am captivated by her books. It's interesting to see writers that I haven't heard of before, like Elizabeth Kostova and Laurel K. Hamilton, I will try to check them out one of these days

I would say Anne Rice simply because I love her writing style and the sumptuousness of the setting she has created and the breadth of vampires she covers. But I haven’t read most of the other authors listed here, I must add them to my list.

I have read the Vampire Academy & Bloodlines by Richelle Mead.
It's a great book and you get to see a different point of view about vampires.
It has everything romance, drama, action, sad scenes that makes you cry, terrific climax.
Would definitely say that you should give it a try.
You will definitely love it.
I'm in love with the characters, the way they have grown.

I think I really like Cynthia Leitich Smith's portrayal of vampires even though she doesn't add much to their perceived traits. She also doesn't write solely vampire fiction, her works also include werewolves and other were creatures as well as other fictional creatures.

Bran stoker is the original vampire story author and I will always choose him, but Anne Rice is amazing at it as well!

Not Bram Stoker. I found Dracula boring. I know many western vampire movies were inspired by Dracula and Nosferatu, such as John Carpenter's Vampires, but digging into folklore, a lot of ancient cultures had stories of undead bloodsucking monsters a long time before Dracula.
I seriously prefer Stephenie Meyer's take on vampires. Don't laugh. The vamps in Blade are pretty cool.

If you like the subgenre of vampire romance novels, J. R. Ward's Black Dagger Brotherhood series and Christine Feehan's Dark Carpathian series are really good.
