My all time favorite author was Ben Carson, Think Big . I read the book close to a dozen times and I could literally spend an entire day on this book :techie-studyinggray: . The book helped me build my confidence and self-esteem as a little kid in an very violent town. My childhood, at the moment was forged with so much sadness , with a family torn apart with domestic conflict between my old folks which quite often turned very violent. At one point i witnessed a fight between my dad and mum that saw my mum lose one of her fingers. My life at that moment and that of Ben Carson had so much in common, while he believed with his single mum, i had to stay with my grandma who had just retired. His story gave me hope that I too would grow up to be someone in the society. Thank you Ben Carson, I love you.

Laurel K Hamilton and Christopher Moore. Still love Moore. Hamilton went from depth to needing an excuse to sleep with every guy in the room constantly about halfway through her Anita Blake series and I gave up on her. I replaced her with James Rollins when I found out about him in college.

That's such a fantastic choice. Neil Gaiman popped into my head as well (among others) when I read the question

I think my favorite author in high school was Nora Roberts. The genre was new and exciting for a teenager and filled in the blanks on a few things I wasn't quite ready to try. It sounds weird now, that I was allowed to read romance novels at that age but they were usually ones my mother had already read so she knew there wasn't anything terrible in them and I think it helped me to develop a stronger sense of importance for my sexuality. The characters in those books loved their partners, they didn't just have sex with random people. Sometimes, the acts were described but it satisfied my curiosity enough that I didn't have to try things on my own before I was ready.

Thanks for asking this question! I don't think I would have realized how these books helped me if I wasn't confronted with the question.
