Should we stop being incentivized for commenting on BOTD review?

So that we can provide faster and better support, this forum (the "Public Suggestion Box") has been retired. Instead, please send any suggestions you have to us using the official website contact form.

This allows us to streamline our support system so that we can get to your message much faster. Instead of our support staff having to check three different places (support forum, suggestion box, and contact form messages), they know can respond to all message through one method, with that one method being the official website contact form.

Should we stop being incentivized for commenting on BOTD review?

Post by ChainsawCat »

Perhaps I am the only cynical person who feels this way, but I usually find it painful to read the string of comments on the official review of the BOTD. It is quite transparent that the comments are there for the purpose of getting an entry for the daily giveaway. The comments do not help me, as a reader, and it's hard to imagine that they really help the reviewer-- though I guess they help the reviewer's "popularity score" (I am new to the site, so I don't really understand how that works). I often go to the review page, read it, scan the existing comments, start to comment myself, feel guilty about adding to the chain of forced compliments under false motives, and close the page.
If others find value in this system, I am happy to be convinced.

The BOTD is a promotion of the book for the author. Those who would like to win the raffle prize attached to the BOTD need to "buy tickets" by doing one or more of the activities enumerated. I personally enjoy the tasks and look forward to getting free books and winning the prize. (If you join daily, you will definitely win one day. I have won eleven times in a little over two years. I also have a ton of free books that are begging to be read.) Nobody is being "forced" to do anything. I think the featured review is one chosen by the author (this is just my guess, though) and usually has the perfect rating (if one is available) for obvious reasons. There is no need to compliment the reviewer, the book, or the review; you only need to post a comment to show that you read the review. The comments on social media sites also need not be positive; you need only to read the posts.

The reviewer of the featured review gets the needed popularity points, of course. Those who post comments get to know the book better (by reading the review and/or the posts in social media) and may find it a possible next read on top of getting a "raffle entry." The author gets his book exposed to more people. All in all, I believe the BOTD promo is a win-win for all involved.
