It is difficult to judge another person's marriage from outside the walls of their home. We weren't there to witness the strengths or weaknesses of their relationship. Perhaps they did try to mend the fences. Or maybe they did try to go to counseling. Sometimes it is better for the children when they don't have to endure a toxic relationship in the home between their parents. Hopefully their decision was eventually the healthiest and happiest for all involved.
