Is Steve a hipocrite?

Post by Valerie Garske »

It seems as if Steve looks the other way when it comes to drugs and Roxy. Just because he was not as bad as the others and had a hidden agenda, does that make it okay to pull a 'get out of jail free card' for Roxy and to smoke dope? Once he puts on the uniform, he should set an example and abide by the law. What do you think?

I don't think he was a hypocrite because he just wanted to fit in with his pals. I could see that he was uncomfortable with what his friends were doing but also was afraid that he would lose them. Like everyone else, he was just human and could not do everything perfectly.

Indeed as an officer of the law he is expected to be held to much higher standards than the average citizen and this entails setting an example for the others. I do agree that his habit of looking away as regards drugs and Roxy was a bit hypocritical.

I'm thankful I'm not the only one who thought that something was off with this logic. But then again, I think drugs were just so casual back then that his only problem was the police catching them doing drugs, not that they were doing drugs as if it was their rights and the law invaded them. His thought of right and wrong and sense of justice both were only triggered by what harms other people, so he didn't actually think it through with what made the individuals harm themselves.
In other words, Steve applied justice only when the system hurt people, not when people hurt themselves, even if it was Roxy. Drugs were just everyday things back in the 70s.
And I'm not sure what to say about the "get out of jail free card", all I know is that he didn't apply law here either.

Steve was somewhat of a hypocrite. He had continuously turned a blind eye to his friend's illegal activities. He didn't want to impose on them as he feared it would only make them more uncomfortable around him, and he would eventually lose them.

I get were you are coming from, but that's a major difference between humans and robots. Will Steve arrest some stranger for possessing drugs? Yes, I think he would. But will arrest Roxy, or Tony? Nope. I guess that makes him a hypocrite.

I did not see Steve as a hypocrite. Being part of the system to make a change is never an act of hypocrisy. Since he didn't forget his goal and joined the corruption; he should be applauded instead.

I think it depends. Smoking dope while illegal isn't that serious of a crime and while he's a police officer, he's a human being first and will at times need to have a life outside of uniform and so I wouldn't say he's a hypocrite, I would say he's just human.

At some point he was because he turned a blind eye to the fact that his brother was a drug dealer. He could be fair enough by handing him to the authority.

I think we all sort of make "exceptions" for the ones we love or for ourselves. It's not ideal but we do it. More than Roxy's marihuana usage, it bothers me that he turns a blind eye to his brother being a drug dealer, which is an even more severe "crime" than what Roxy does.

Well, I do not have much experience with the term "hypocrite"? I do many things that may not be blending well with the moral laws, but situations sometimes create such a mess to take such steps. Roxy is her love. He needed to free her from the cell but he couldn't save others from the cell. Wait, . . . Yeah, I agree with you. He is a hypocrite. I don't know. Just kidding.

I think whichever uniform we put on we are always biased when it comes to those we love. We never really want those we love to be punished when we can help it. I think Steve was just being human.

He did not want to join the police in the first place. He just used his position for what he intended to do.

Steve is never a hypocrite. Sacrificing his education for the safety of others is already enough. Everyone has their own shortcomings. I don't judge actions, I judge intentions because sometimes intentions may be right but the actions will turn out to be wrong. He lost all his valuable relationships because of this struggle.

Steve did that with Tommy as well when he escorted him to trade drugs. I agreed that he's a hypocrite even though he was keen on sanitizing the system. Charity they say begins from home.
