Grief takes a toll on a person and losing a chikd must be devastating. I think Roxy's mom just couldn't move on from that and should have been helped.
This doesn't excuse the way that she was with Rkxy though.

I'm not sure if she has a medical condition, but I believe it's because she was too preoccupied with her deceased daughter and never warmed up to Roxy. Second, it appears that way because of her excessive religiosity.

Roxy's mother wasn't mentally okay, in my opinion. This is one part I did not appreciate, I felt the author did not give us depth to this character. Another novel could be made to understand this particular character, but as for being mentally okay? That's not one.

I believe she may be suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. This may be because of the loss of one of her daughters, and we can see this from the way she prepare the room that belongs to the dead child for Roxy and even decorate it with the color that the dead child liked but Roxy didn't.

Silvio Omutsiambo wrote: 06 Aug 2022, 07:38 Roxy's mother was one of the unique characters I saw in the book. She sends her real daughter out of her home and doesn't care if she'll be back. Do you think she might be suffering from some mental illness after her other daughter died?
I think she wasn't because if she was she'd know (or at least pretend to know) that she had to daughters. She remembers that she was a staunch (rather "judgy") christian, was married, and lost her husband and daughter. She just never factirs Roxy in her thoughts, unless there's no otherwise.

Roxy's mother, in my opinion, is mentally upright. However, Roxy's lifestyle is questionable and her mother should be tough on her in goalal circumstance.

She had a perfectly normal mental state, but the fact that Roxy wasn't the object of her love speaks poorly of her. I wasn't shocked by her behavior because kicking your daughter out because she slept on your bed happens frequently in homes.

I think that Ruth's mother is suffering from a mental disorder, possibly dissociation or PTSD and I felt roxy should have understood her mother more.

In my opinion, Roxy's mother is not in a normal mental health condition. I believe she is suffering from PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) after suffering the death of her child. She usually mistake roxy for her deceased child.

When Roxy was talking about her mom, I felt her pain. I don’t understand why a mother will keep holding onto her dead daughter when there’s one alive. But I feel it’s because she’s trying to impose her Christian beliefs on Roxy and Roxy isn’t having any of it. She’s perfectly okay.

Yeah, I think Roxy's mother was mentally deranged after loosing her daughter.

Judging from the way she reacted after the loss of her one of her daughter. I want to believe that she isn't in the right mental state. Although, accepting and moving on over grief isn't an easy thing to do so I understand what she was passing through at that point in time.

I don't think there is anything wrong with Roxy's mother, she only wants the best life for her daughter, nothing more.

To me, she’s okay. She’s just neglecting her other daughter, Roxy, because she’s not the dead daughter, who was her mother’s favorite. And I feel most of Roxy’s behavior is she being rebellious.
