I think James was indecisive about his his principles. He was torn between pleasing his father and betraying his heart. I think he couldn't stomach the fact that his father didn't deserve winning all the time, especially if that affected James on the long run.

It was definitely affected by the code of society at the time. James faced serious jail time if they were caught, and Lily could have been sentenced to death for what was happening. You could feel the anguish and longing through the writing. Once they were comfortable with the people around them, they did show their affections more in public settings. However, they took great risks in doing so outwardly.

Yes, definitely it was. Their connection was affected by the slave code and the society around them. I noticed that James' actions and sentiments toward Lily have been limited and constrained because of what he’s seeing and what they are accustomed with.

If the story had implied that society had no influence whatsoever on the relationship, it would have been unrealistic. Therefore, it is understandable that the slave code would affect their relationship and how expressive they could be.

Of course, it definitely affected their relationship. Because of the societal norms at that time, they couldn't be open to each other and freely express their love.

Some ugly circumstances can trigger feelings between two people. That's exactly what happened between James and Lilly. Circumstance like the slave code.

The slave code and the social ladder in society affected their relationship. He couldn’t openly express his feelings for Lily because of this, and not because he wanted to.

The societal slave code and the stereotypes of slavery affected the relationship of James and Lily significantly. These codes created defining boundaries that seemed to strain the relationship between James and Lily especially in communicating their feelings towards each other which according to the societal standards, would not have been justified.

Even if they didn't care, it would have affected them. Everything we do is influenced by society, even if we deny it.

The slave code and society around them did affect their relationship because they hid it at a young age, and James decided to hide his feelings because he did want his father to punish Lily.

The slave code had an impact on the relationship of James and Lily to a greater extent. The two were very open to the relationship and wanted to see through with it, but the slave code restricted James from manifesting his true feelings towards Lily. The slave code pronounced what was good or bad in terms of social interactions and relationships.

Honestly, I think James and Lily's feelings for each other were seriously tempered due to the slave code and societal norms.

I agree that the slave codes affected James and Lily's relationship. Although, its entirely possible that James could have done better in the relationship despite the influence of the slave codes.

Their society and slave code obviously have an effect on them. They were both from different social classes, and that posed a real threat to their relationship.

I would say Yes. Society belief and notion affected their relationship. James could not openly profess and show his love for Lily.
