I am of the opinion that he got amnesia due to his mental illness rather than the accident. But, it was real.

I think his amnesia was real but may have been a coincidence with the accident.

I was on the fence for a while but I think his amnesia was real. I don't think it was caused by the accidents but by mental illness.

John's amnesia was real. It may not have been caused by the accident, but rather a build up of things that have happened in the past. But, I genuinely do not think that he was faking it.

I'm inclined to agree, I do think his amnesia was genuine. It may or may not have had to do with the accident but I do think that the emotional distress definitely added on to that and could have actually been what triggered or caused it.

I think he genuinely had amnesia rather than faked it. One can not be certain if his amnesia was induced by which events exactly, but there sure is a possibility that it was caused by mental illness. I believe it was a mix of everything. His failure in life, the accident, and his mental illness.

I think it would be hard for anyone to fake having amnesia. But given the way things play out I think his amnesia may be caused by a mental illness.

I think his amnesia was real, but I think it probably had more to do with his overall mental health than the accident. The accident may have triggered it, but I think it had more to do with his general mental state.

I think the trauma from the accident may have triggered his mental illness into simulating his amnesia. How else would he have conscious awareness of his condition? I just can't wrap my head around the idea of a man suffering from amnesia being so aware of his condition before being diagnosed.

I believe John's amnesia was actually real. Perhaps he struggled with his feeling of failure, but I don't believe he faked amnesia because of it.

I’m still not entirely sure whether his amnesia was real or fake: I found myself leaning towards the fact that his amnesia was real quite a few times but then I realized that his amnesia was the perfect escape from previous failures in his life. If the amnesia was real though, it definitely wasn’t from the accident. It was probably caused by his mental illness as a kind of repressing memories and past incidents.

The amnesia was real. Was it actually triggered by the fall, or did his internal angst set it off like a firecracker in the brain? In either case, amnesia was necessary to move the story in the direction chosen by the author. Without the memory loss, the story would not have had the impact that it did with John trying to put all the pieces together to not only determine what happened but to save his sanity.

I think it would be difficult to pull off a fake amnesia without slipping off. The shock from the accident apparently triggered the amnesia which even John tried to hide.

After thoroughly reading this book, I believe John had amnesia, but it was caused by mental illness rather than a car accident. He had a lot of problems in his life that he couldn't address and denied ever existed.
