If you have ever dreamed of a full-time writing career, then you must consider reading The Writer's Roadmap written by Leigh Shulman. In this concise, 54 page guide, the author assists her audience through various exercises to bring ideas to paper that will solidify this lifestyle that may seem out of reach. Using a simple acronym, OGSM, which stands for objectives, goals, strategies, and measures, aspiring authors can partake of her knowledge and move toward success.
I chose this book because the title seemed inviting, and once I started on the first page, I was caught up in the author's infectious positivity. This is a rare find in a book that demands that a person sit and write out goals. Usually, the thought of doing that can be mentally paralyzing. However, it is done in a way that is simple and upbeat. She begins by assigning three timed exercises where specific questions are pondered, and free writing is to flow. From this, an objective statement is constructed that will serve as a destination for where a person may want to go with their writing. Examples of objective statements are given to lighten the thought process and to foster creativity. Each step of the OGSM model is fashioned to be completed in short sessions with results quickly obtained. This wards off procrastination and gives one a solid sense of direction. Each chapter is dedicated to one of the four parts making it easy to go back and review for better comprehension.
I liked how this was presented in a careful, gentle approach with a touch of humor. It is quite apparent that the advice within this book is being given by an individual who has put into action what she is teaching. Her passion as a workshop leader who helps women become published professionals is evident in her bright tone. She writes about her successes and bumps she has encountered on her way toward fulfilling her goals. Her instructions are uncomplicated, and by the end of the book, I had easily completed all of the exercises. This resulted in a solid plan for me to work with, review and revise. As I mentioned before, this book is short, so I don't want to go into too much detail and spoil it for potential participants. I approached this not knowing much about the contents and was so surprised to have obtained such a valuable and revealing piece of information at the conclusion. That, in itself, is part of the magic of this book.
So often, writers or others who possess gifts of creativity don't believe they can achieve full-time employment using their talents. They are told that they need a 'day job' to pay bills and live a reputable life. This author dispels that myth and gives her readers the tools to turn a far off wish into reality. Along with the writing sessions, she has put in client case studies to prove further that if other people can do this, anyone is capable.
I thoroughly enjoyed this one, and I did not find anything I didn't like. The writing is of high quality with no errors in spelling, grammar or punctuation. For those who love to write and desire to see this become more than a hobby, you will enjoy this helpful guide. I am awarding this a 4 out of 4 stars for its excellent and applicable information.
