Review of Manufacturing Criminals
Manufacturing Criminals by Bonnie Burkhardt is a documentary about the police organization ICAC (Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force). It claims that ICAC uses tactics that violate Fourth Amendment rights to acquire evidence that is used to convict online child predators.
The subject of online child predators is one that many people are aware of in today's society. Protecting children is extremely difficult in the current age of technology and digital advancement, especially with the recent prevalence of online dating apps. The ease with which minors can access these apps creates simple opportunities for online child predators.
Surprisingly, this book wasn't as hard to get through as I had initially assumed it would be. The organized format of the book made it simple to read. Loaded with strong opinions supported by facts, the author's narrative comes through clearly. This style of writing makes for an interesting, if somewhat flat, read.
ICAC originated in Virginia but is now a nationwide organization. The author explained there are legal methods that ICAC could utilize to apprehend online child predators. Despite this fact, ICAC uses tactics that directly violate the communication interception laws derived from our Fourth Amendment. The author also presented the laws that supported her statements. Burkhardt states that ICAC uses impersonation, entrapment, and altered data to increase the odds of apprehension and subsequent conviction of child predators. These explanations helped me to understand Burkhardt's point of view better.
What I liked best about the book is how informative this work is. One portion of the book that I found particularly interesting was found in chapters 20 and 21, where Burkhardt transcribed the meetings she had with the Stafford County Sheriff's Department and the Virginia State Police. Including the details of facts helps readers see how the author's work is validated.
There weren't many negative points of the book other than being a little dry, which is expected of a documentary like this. There were a few editing mistakes here and there, which affected the quality of the book. For these reasons, this book has achieved a rating of 3 out of 4 stars. It will appeal most to readers who enjoy documentaries regarding constitutional law. I recommend this book to fans of non-fiction. Due to the adult themes, including child pornography and child predators, it is suited to a more mature audience.
