Official Review: My Dream for a good Life.
My Dream for a Good Life by Ingrid De Michele is the author’s memoir about her awful childhood years, but also the transformation she underwent to eventually become a happy wife and mother. This book has a serious mood, while the author adds many details about her early life to create an interesting atmosphere in the text.
The author starts her memoir by describing her experiences of Germany being bombed in 1945 when she was two years of age. She explains how hard her mother worked for her family, but she adds that her father was captured by the Soviets. So, her mother found another man and had a child named Alfred with him. When her father was released from the prison camp, her mother divorced him and married the other man, who was named Erwin, and had another child with him, named Reinhardt. The writer describes how horrible of a stepfather Erwin was, as he did not provide for his family. The writer also says that she was not allowed to play on weekends because he demanded their help, while she also mentions that she was beaten by him. She also writes about her memories of playing with her friend Caroline.
There were plenty of nice things in this memoir. I enjoyed the fact that the book was logically, chronologically, and cohesively compiled, allowing readers to understand the author’s life experiences. I also liked that the writer described her experiences using emotion, thereby adding an interesting atmosphere in the text. What I liked most about this memoir was that the author added several pictures of her youth, which added some liveliness to the book, making the memoir more exciting and vivid.
What I disliked most about this book was that it was unprofessionally edited, as there were many grammatical, typographical, and punctuation errors in the text.
I think that this book is best suited for older female readers who like memoirs. Female readers will like this book more because the author describes things from a woman’s perspective in the text. Also, older readers who grew up in Germany will prefer this memoir, as they will better relate to the author’s experiences and her memories of things in Germany before unification.
To conclude, I rate this memoir with 3 out of 4 stars. I would have given it a perfect rating if it did not include so many errors. It deserves this rating because it was beautifully compiled and coherently structured.

Perhaps; but memoirs (and all books really) need not necessarily be relatable to be enjoyable. In fact, an unrelatable book might even be much more interesting precisely because of the different perspectives it might present.I think that this book is best suited for older female readers who like memoirs. I agree with you. I was going to slightly disagree with this same statement as well, but since you've already aired it, I'll second your comment.grgmrn wrote: ↑26 Aug 2020, 14:08Perhaps; but memoirs (and all books really) need not necessarily be relatable to be enjoyable. It's a great review regardless and details about this memoir were laid out well enough.
