Official Review: Pocket Without Holes by Douglas Oppong
Do you know anyone broke after experiencing wealth? Are you in that place where you can't wrap your head around why money doesn't stay long in your hands? Pocket Without Holes by Douglas Oppong might be the one thing that will turn the tide.
This book takes the reader on a journey to proper financial management. The author identified some factors that contribute to a leaking pocket. These factors can be anything from money myths to spending habits — and everything in between. Ultimately, this book provides practical solutions on how to plug the holes in your pocket and live in financial abundance.
I decided to read this book because it was about money management. Over the years, I've read tons of stuff on how to make money, build a business, or become an entrepreneur. However, I've only seen a few books that practically teach money management. This book is one of them. The things I learned from Pocket Without Holes are invaluable. I've started implementing some of them. I enjoyed the content of this book.
What I liked most about the book was that the author used practical examples to explain some of the concepts that he introduced. These examples were drawn from his experiences and interactions with other people. He didn't paint himself as a saint that always got it right. He shared his struggles with money mismanagement and lessons the reader could learn from them. He also used simple things that most people could identify with for explanations. I was specifically impressed by the mousetrap scenario he shared in the book — it opened my eyes to certain things I didn't know was eating deep into my finances.
I also liked that the book was engaging. At the end of each chapter, there was a "food for thought" section. These sections involved exercises the reader could do to practice the things learned in the chapters immediately. To that end, I would say that this book came off to me as a financial management handbook.
Beyond the grammatical errors I found in the book, a few other things didn't sit well with me. First, the formatting issues were disconcerting. There were line breaks in between sentences. I almost marked some sentences as incomplete, only to see them continue on another line. This situation greatly affected the reading flow. The content was great, but the formatting wasn't.
Another thing I wasn't happy about was the possible copyright issue with the cover design. I saw watermarks all over the book's cover. I had to juggle through a lot to make sense of why the author allowed the book to be published with a watermarked cover design. This issue could be a turnoff for some readers. If I wasn't going to review this book, I might not have gone past the cover.
This book could use another round of editing to fix grammatical errors, formatting problems, and possible copyright issues. To that end, I rate it 2 out of 4 stars. Though I enjoyed the content, the negative concerns I pointed out were too grave for me to give a higher rating. The content of this book will resonate with everyone. However, I especially recommend it to anyone who needs a practical guide on money management.
