I think it's his good heart and kind soul. Behind all of his flash and confidence, he's just a man who wants to be with the woman he loves. He would do anything for the people he cares about. That's the thing that always stood out to be about Gatsby. He's a good man just trying to find his way in the world.

I think the title was ironic, Gasby had everything but he had nothing, not even geniue love and even thats free. In my taught what made him great was living and dieing with nothing, that pretty hard to do for anyone, don't you think?

hey @venivici. jumping on what you said " not even genuine love and even that's free." love isn't free it requires all of you. you have to give your heart to a person, not just heart you have to give all of yours to someone you love.

So true but then your not truly success when you don't have someone to share your intimate success with, someone to create memories the are deep. The kind you create in the silence. Gasby had everything but he had nothing

For me, I love The Great Gatsby because the book was very verbose. I learned so many new vocabulary and Fitzgerald really strings his sentences together so well. Gatsby is like a main character from a Mexican telenovela for me (a poor guy rejected by his gf's family because he was poor, disappears and then suddenly appears with lots of wealth from who knows where). But that's what I like about Gatsby, he represented everything grandiose and everything I wanna be. He became a success because of hard work. A lot of people see Gatsby as a personification of the American Dream. Tragic ending though.

I don't think he was great. I think he created a fake persona of greatness.

In my opinion, Gatsby is great, indeed. He is an entertainer, with a witty personality and pursues his dreams in a very assertive manner. Of course he has some flaws, but I feel that they do not alter his greatness.

Gatsby is not great. He's obsessed and insecure and is buying friends. The book itself is not great either. Yes, the picture painted of the roaring twenties is vivid, and the characters each have their own unique voice, but the situation that ultimately leads to the tragedy is so contrived that I can't get on board with the Gatsby fan club.

Me neither. Even though I liked the book, I didn't think it was extraordinary. I remember thinking it was over-rated. Except for the partying and socialising, I do not remember much. But I do remember Leonardo di Caprio from the movie version, though I can't remember anything "great" about Gatsby, even from the movie.

Undoubtedly The Great Gatsby is a recognized classic. Interestingly, the book did not sell very well during Fitzgerald’s lifetime and when he died in 1940 he seemed to have regarded the book as a failure but what a failure. Elegant prose, lined with glittering dialog and streams of consciousness that observe the most occluded emotions and subtleties of character, Fitzgerald defines a style that is at once modern and of his time. Recalling the glory days of a fading empire, Dick Diver’s ascent, peak and melancholic unravelling lights up the world and then fades sadly into obscurity with no real trigger or turning point. Fantastic book and amazing movie(s).

I spent most of my time reading The Great Gatsby confused. Gatsby was crazy with obsession and I think he threw garish parties to impress to cover his loneliness and pining for the girl he didn't feel he was good enough for. I got to the point where things were moving so quickly and so many things were going on I was completely confused by the end. It will definitely be one I will read again to see what I missed, because I feel I missed something big...By the end of the book, I thought I enjoyed the book but couldn't really reiterate what I had truly read.
