The Story of Mankind

Post by I can read »

The Story of Mankind was written by Hendrik Willem Van Loon in 1921. It was awarded the Newbery Medal in 1922 which was the first year the medal was awarded. This is a slow hard read. It is the furthest thing from the books that are published now days for children. By the title you can tell what it is about. It is a history book with no pictures. It was written with a Christian world view however the dinosaur era is recorded in the book. I was amazed to learn that this is the caliber of book that children read almost 100 years ago. I don't think most adults would read the whole thing, that is, if they even picked it up.
