I don't know if it was popular, but I was taught it in school. It was called "The prince and the pauper".

all of Shakespeare's stories were quite popular when I was a kid, I used to have a cherished collection book of his work, which I gave away later to inspire another budding reader. Other than that, I remember being obsessed with snow white and little red riding hood books.

For me the most popular childhood book was The Bernstein Bears. I loved those books because as a child I learned a lot from those books.

Pride and Prejudice was the one. I remember being the only kid not to have read it in my block.

All of the Sherlock stories. That could just be because my mom read them to me as bedtime stories though.

Jane Austen, The Bronte Sisters, Thomas Hardy, Arthur Conan Doyle and Alexandre Dumas.
All great writers and all very popular. But the most popular writer has to be Jane Austen. From all her great novels from Pride & Prejudice to Persuasion to Sense & Sensibility. Jane Austen is most definitely a writer with the most popularity and relatable author. Writing about all prejudice woman can face in life especially when it comes to love.
But this not the only great classic author every classic writer has a great storyline.

When I was a child I only know one popular classic, Romeo and Juliet (since there were not much books in the community I live in). I've read it twice. And each time I cried my eyes out with how tragic the love story of Romeo and Juliet. 😭
