The main issues that the are discussed are the ones which are not only prevalent in today's society but also are some of the most prominent issues faced by humanity. Race, sexual abuse, domestic violence and poverty are definitely some of the core issues present.

Race was the most prevalent theme in the narrative. Kalayla for instance, was biracial.

I agree with improper child bringing. Also, regret. Lena nurtured Maureen to becoming a better mother due to her past regretful experiences with her four sons.

In regards to housing issues, it touched me to learn that Kalalyla’s bedroom is compared to the closet in Lena's spare room. This shows how bad things were for Kalayla and her mum.
I was also moved by the financial gap between Maureen and Lena. The tough experiences kalayla went through shaped her to becoming a better version of herself.

I agree with the other contributors on this forum in their responses of poverty, racism and sexual orientation being some of the many themes that we as a society our exploring. I do not believe that any of these issues are strictly American made issues, but rather global problems that take a variety of forms within different societies. I also think that the protests that are happening are an outgrowth of the anger and grief felt by groups of people that have been oppressed.

I would have to say poverty. It seems to then cause other things like a child spending the entire day in the laundromat or her mom have to constantly be working.

The most prevalent current issue I've seen is the lack of parental guidance and racism. I do agree that there are so many others included in this book. But those two are the ones that made an impact to me

I don't there's much to add here. Others have made the main points here. Racism, domestic violence, poverty and everything surrounding it. I like to say that the author have found a way to blend all these and make a good story.

I think one of the biggest societal issues is how children now lack parental guidance. Children are left to raise themselves up because parents are too busy to be parents.

Gender equality is what dorminantly stood out for me. It reminded me of the imbalance in our political organisations and how we have ignored inclusivity in our administrative systems.

One issue not really mentioned is the idea that Lena has criticized for not living well-to-do as her money would allow her. Her family didn't want to come to see her or children weren't allowed to come to her apartment because of where she lived. She lived as she wanted despite her income level and paid dearly for her decision.

Sexual abuse and racism are the top two issues discussed for me. I think we need more actions and awareness around these issues. Jeanie did a great job raising these in her book

The current social issues which include racism, sexual abuse, domestic violence and mental illness amongst others as highlighted by the book have been age long issues but I think it's becoming more prevalent the more the world civilizes
