I love when books are able to transport you to an alternative reality and this one definitely sounds like it is a doozy. Between the twist and turns of the plot, the powerful writing, and the magical realism, a reader is in for an awesome ride... just not to the asylum.

I love tales of mystics and think this one sounds awesome. I also love trains, so it's a shame they are trying to derail them. I can't wait to read it. Thanks for the great review.

Your review has me intrigued. I figured by the cover it was more for young kids, not adults. I might have to check this one out.

I think the cover to this book is deceiving. It sounds like this story covers a lot of complex societal themes and intricately developed characters. I’m not sure this one is for me, but the alternate history premise is interesting!

So what genre's does the book belong to? As you noted it is not really teen fiction, so young adult perhaps. It is definitely paranormal fantasy, steampunk (if there is such a sub-genre), romance perhaps. I loved the sample and want to read the entire story. Your review is good and gave me so much more information that the sample.
Thanks!

The engine woman's light is a book which take you to a mystic world where people can speak with spirits from the shadows world, who can show you the reason of your life. Juanita speak with Moses, Egypt Prince, with water and through them she will discover who she really is. Interesting story.

You do a great job of describing the book. I love it when authors take the characters in unpredictable directions. Also, the ending sounds incredible. So I'm definitely gonna try this book out. Thanks for the amazing review.

Thanks for the warning! I must say that I might like the adventure aspect, but it seems a bit dark for my liking. Congrats on the review!

I enjoy the idea of her breaking free off the train but this book sounds a bit too dark for me. I really can't handle abuse and rape well. Glad that others can enjoy this book though!

There are so many layers in this story, all at once. The ghosts, spirits, mysterious ancestors, and whatnot! It certainly seems different than the coming-of-age novels that I have read lately. I look forward to checking it out. Thank you for the detailed review.

After reading the sample available on Amazon, I have been completely captured by Hill’s creation. As a lover of steampunk (re: Leviathan), dystopia (too many to name), and the influence our culture has on us, I am astounded at how Hill is able to intricately weave all the elements together. From the appearance of Juanita’s great-grandfather in ghost form to the hint of steampunk mixed with Biblical mysticism in the vision of Moses with goggles, Hill creates a world just waiting to be entered. Any book worth reading in these mixed genres should make the reader uncomfortable. It is the task of the author to push us outside of our comfort zones and into the zone of thinking beyond.
Based on this review, it appears that Hill does exactly that. My only fear is that the romance alluded to will in some way disrupt the magic of the relationships between Juanita, her ancestors, and this dystopian world.
