The Devouring Sword, by Eve Lowrance, centers around a young, strong-willed girl named Jafara, and a womanizing prince named Nikolas. Set in an ancient world where warlords govern over peasants, the two slowly become entangled in each other’s lives as the threat of war looms over the horizon.

As the baseborn daughter of the emperor, Jafara is looked down upon by nearly everyone in the Kingdom. Betrothed to Stylam, the sickly younger prince of the Kingdom, Jafara loathes the thought of marrying him, and she is willing to do anything to stop the union. When her twin brother, Jaram, is sent off to Shirak, a large estate that is in a constant fight with barbarians, she tries to find a way out of the wedding. However, when things go wrong, she gets sent to live with Lord Goraney, who she’s heard through the grapevine is an evil murderer. A chance encounter with Prince Nikolas has her hoping for the impossible, but as they grow closer together, she finds herself torn between giving in to her desires or risk death.

For the most part, I thought the plot was interesting, but it seemed to drag out. At first, I wasn’t sure where the story was going at first, and it wasn’t until around the middle of the book that it started to pick up. I would say that it is more character-driven than plot-driven. Also, I felt like the ending was very abrupt because of a few unanswered questions. Besides that, I thought that the settings were very descriptive, and I could easily visualize the scenes as they played out.

What I liked most about this book were the characters and their interactions with each other. I thought the characters were well rounded, but flawed making them seem lifelike. I found Jafara to be very headstrong, but clueless at times. Lord Nikolas is very arrogant but has a gentle side to him. The perspective also switches between Jafara’s point of view and Lord Nicholas’s point of view, which makes it intriguing to see their thoughts about each other. Romance, suspense, and drama fill each page of the book, so those who are looking for a romance-filled fantasy book will not be disappointed.

Overall, I rate it 3 out of 4 stars. At first, I had no idea what direction the book was going, and it wasn’t until halfway through the novel that I started to get a sense of it. Besides that, it was compelling to see how the characters interacted with each other. There were a few graphic scenes, so I would not recommend this book to younger readers. I found some grammatical errors, but they did not detract from the book. I would recommend this book to those who like reading character-driven books with romance and fantasy elements.
