If you have ever wondered what goes on in the mind of an old person, or ever doubted the adage, "With age comes wisdom", then you need to check out The Musings of an Old Lady by Barb McIntyre.

This blend of fiction and non-fiction, The Musings of an Old Lady, takes the reader into the journal/memoir of Polly Elizabeth Osborne, a 78 year old woman, born to Scottish and Irish parents. This journal unveils Polly's thoughts as well as her journey through life. It explains her life using the five w's and one h rule – who, what, where, when, why and how.

As an aftermath of her return from her sister's funeral, this book also reveals that every person over 75 years of age, thinks about death. And in dedicating more than half of this 411-page book to Polly's life, experiences and thoughts, a good number of quotes from several sources were brought to light. One of which was a quote by Einstein – “Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance, you must keep moving.” Also, Polly's comparison of her generation to the modern generation, and the story behind the title of the book, were made known to the reader.

Of all the things I thought were peculiar to this book, it was the fact that it was written in the first person narrative that stood out for me. This is because I feel it creates a connection with the reader. And can be likened to sitting and listening to wise words from an old lady or reading an autobiography. More so, I saw the quotes as nuggets of wisdom to guide the young.

In as much as I found most aspects of this book fascinating, I also thought the story was a bit draggy. The back and forth movement of narrating the who in her life, using the five w's and one h rule, was also a bit disconcerting.

However, the simplicity and seamless transition of events made this book a joy to read. It contained minor typographical and grammatical errors. It also lacked profane words, gory scenes and erotic scenes. I have no reason to detract any star from this book as it appears to be professionally edited. Therefore, I'd rate it a 4 out 4 stars.

I would recommend this book to anyone interested in books with facts about life. Those who love history would also find it interesting. At the same time, I would advise anyone sensitive to comments against religion to steer clear as Polly, being an atheist, made mention of her disbelief in a supreme being.
