I like how he decided to drop his R's in an effort to speak in the more traditional sense of proper English. It's a unique situation to watch a character go through and I found it funny.

Martin is a perfect illustration of the adage, "Behind every man there is always a woman." I admired his ability to exercise selfcontrol and blatant refusal to yield to peer influence. He is definitely my definition of an ideal man.

His inner strength and courage to fight the odds.
And most importantly, his true emotions, captured my heart.

I loved the traits of Zachariah Martin because he was disciplined, hardworking, ready to learn, caring, loving and committed to his responsibilities. I really loved how he stood his ground in the game of slapies,he remained true to tally and gave an open ear to Palmer.

He was faithful to his girlfriend, he gave his job in the Navy his all, and he was just a good guy. He did not deserve the treatment he got from the VA.

His patriotism, devotion, and loyalty are commendable. During the beginning of the story, he is seen as a naive country bumpkin. However, his adaptability is one of the reasons that he steadily matured mentally.

I loved watching him come of age, and seeing his love for Tally. That consistency made humanized him, and drove home the idea that servicemembers and veterans are every day americans just like the rest of us.
