The end result and what benefited him the most

If they hadn't murdered anyone would they have been effective antagonists?

Yes his plans all eventually crumbled around him

It was sickening how he laughed as he drove away after killing the office manager and his secretary at the mine.

The author did a great job of making the reader hate this villain.
I agree. Dirk/DeGroot/Hendrik Janssen was the most loathsome villain in the book. He was so remorseless as he played mind games with his victims. Like a true psychopath, he used his charm to gain the trust of his victims before attacking them. It was interesting how Sarah and Jamie were suspicious of him from the start.
Andidnt he have like 3 aliases.

So who would then? For you?

Very manipulative andconniving. No remorse whatsoever.

Yeah aliases are important if you want to succed the art of tricking others. He did that part thoroughly though.

Yeah but I think I would have liked him to have a bit more empathy.

Another think I would liked to know that why is he doing what he is doing. I would have loved a little one chapter backstory about de Groot.

That's what usually happens in a story with happy ending. What is significant is how is he defeated.

Yes because antagonism doesn't basically have to do with murders. It can just be other actions going contrary to that of the norm of what the protagonist is.

Dirk was certainly the main villain in this story. His saccharine sweetness toward British officials one moment, and his brutal violence the next really ratcheted up his creepy meter score. Who else thought those Dutch businessmen were just a little too nosy to be for real? ;)

I agree that Degroot is definitely the worst villain in my opinion. A lot of the time villains are bad but in their eyes they are doing the right thing, while he just seems to do awful things for enjoyment which makes him even worse.

I'm a little flummoxed by the question because I usually like high quality villains. DeGroot shared several qualities with another of my favourite fictional villains; DC Comics' the Joker.

You might as well read about it in a book.
