Conflict is the major theme of the book. The insurgents, government, Intelligence, among others. There seems to be a profound conflict. Johnny is kidnapped by people who want to overthrow the government, hence the involvement of the Australians.

As everybody has already mentioned, conflict is definitely the main theme of the book. Also I will say turmoil is another. But then it is close to conflict, so we will just go with conflict.

The reasons as to why gangs cropped up is the major theme of the story. This I say so because they are masked as parties rallying for the freedom of the suppressed, while chasing their own interests. Hence, the current instabilities that were ongoing.
