ARA Review by Lisajayauthor of End of the Last Great Kingdom

The ARA Review Exchange is a system in which authors review other authors' books, generlaly in exchange for getting their own book reviews by other authors. However, the person who reviews a author's book is not the same person whose book that author reviewed. This way, author reviews do not influence each other, such as by an author being inclined to reward a good review by deliving one in return or deliver a negative review as revenge.

This is a story of another world, one filled with magic however in a lot of ways similar to our own. It starts by describing this world with different races that could control the four elements. Over time, the amount of races grew leading to slavery and wars over land. Sounds familiar huh? By the time things settled down and the world became stable, there was a race called the enlightened that were a special kind of race, one where each person could still control one of the four elements.

It is in this seemingly calm world the story picks up and we begin to follow the main character of Brimstone. There are special schools for the enlightened where they go as children to learn how to control the element they retain power over. This is not an ordinary school for children with magic; this is a school that repeatedly states not all survive. This school is full of trials and battles, testing each child and pushing them to their limits. As we learn more and more about Brimstone and his power, how different he really is because he cannot control any element, we learn more about how corrupt this world of magic is. The more you read, the more engulfed in the story you become and see how similar to our world it really is.

Brimstone is more of a reluctant hero throughout the book which captures your attention more than anything else. He is a character you want to root for and right when you think things are going well for him a curve ball is thrown in. His is a world of magic, of danger and corruption.

But is Brimstone an enlightened since he cant control an element? What do we know of his past other than he is an orphan? These are all things the author teases as the book goes on describing the adventures and mishaps of a new anti hero.

I give this book a 5/5 rating for bringing us a new vision of a world with magic and a new unsuspecting hero to capture our hearts.
