ARA Review by pastoanani of Misreading Judas

The ARA Review Exchange is a system in which authors review other authors' books, generlaly in exchange for getting their own book reviews by other authors. However, the person who reviews a author's book is not the same person whose book that author reviewed. This way, author reviews do not influence each other, such as by an author being inclined to reward a good review by deliving one in return or deliver a negative review as revenge.

Author Robert Wahler proposes a major change of the traditional reading of the Gospels in his book, Misreading Judas: How Biblical Scholars Missed the Biggest Story of All Time. The book brings alife the theory of self-sacrifice of the gnostic view, hence Judas did not betray Jesus.

The author's thesis is made by the non-Canonical Gospel of Judas (2006 by National geographic) and the Nag Hammadi Library of Gnostic Literature of Egypt (1945) in comparison to the New Testament Canonical Gospels. It reveals conversations between Jesus and Judas Iscariot, which shows that Christians are misled by the institutionalization of the faith and by so doing challenge the New Testament scholarship on the Gospels as they related to the character of Judas.

Although Misreading Juda is addressed to the general public, in order to assess the author, one has to have some good knowledge of Coptic at least. Whaler inverts the negative image of Judas through history and brings positive details in a novel perspectives on Gnosticism.

Misreading Jesus is rated 4 out of 5 because it is a kind of masterpiece even though I do not accept the conclusions of the author, he presented his case quite well.
