Endings

Post by Sarah Starling »

I really liked the suicide ending of the book. It seemed to really complete the story. When he said that he gets to experience what he made others experience, a death by his own hands, it just seemed to be the perfect ending.

Then the real ending showed up and I was a little disappointed because it didn't give a real sense of finality. I think this ending opened the book up for a sequel where he joins the Union, so if Gariffo was planning another book this makes more sense, but it didn't seem to fit quite as well.

What did you think of the real ending? Did you prefer the fake one more too?

Nope. I also think the somewhat tragic, suicide ending must have ended the whole story. Tragic endings keep the stories in readers' minds. I think this book just lost that

Not read the book, but I don't agree with you. The fact that he was a killer doesn't mean he can't get a second chance at life.

I have a very similar opinion. I don't like the sequel-like ending, I'm more a sucker for depressing endings. These are ones that get attention and leave a lot of the audiences unhappy. I like endings that stick out as being different.

I didn’t find it very satisfying if I’m honest. It really didn’t seem to fit, which was disappointing.

I actually enjoyed the double ending. I thought it reflected the tone of the story well. Give up and end it, or press on and deal with it.

I much preferred the fake ending. It felt more conclusive than the real one, which was lackluster to me.

I really don't like depressing endings. Yes, they help a book stand out. But, when I've invested a ton of time reading a book, I just want resolution.

Sound like it was anti-climatic as if Harry Potter didn't actually need to die and get resurrected after all.

I felt the ending reflected the evolution of Sliver's character. He realized he could have a choice on how he lives. I personally loved the faked out ending and was hoping he chose life instead of death. It shows someone with such brokenness can have hope also.

Endings like these depress me so I did not particularly like it.

I was disheartened when I thought suicide was going to be his end. And so relieved when it was not true. He had never had a chance to choose how he would live, now he has a purpose.

I liked both endings, although having them both back to back did throw me off a little. I read the author interview post earlier today, and Gariffo did mention that he might consider a sequel, but only if he thinks he can do it right. That may be why he decided to put in the second ending.

I think either ending would have worked, but I wasn't keen on there being two. I preferred the 'fake' ending; I don't have a problem with downer endings if they fit with the story, and that one seemed to fit the best.
