Yes, there is need for a dad. Their function in family setups is unappreciated. There are certain roles in a family set up that can only be done by men.

I don't think that addition of Dad is required to this story. Tony is enjoying and doing all those stuff for which Dad is not required. In fact in absence of Dad's character, Tony will be more responsible.

I am a single mother and have lovely son like Tony.
