I think Gary reminded Duke of himself when he was young. So, he didn't want this young life to waste like his did and imparted wisdom showing how to not ruin himself.

I think it's their "craziness" that brought Duke and Gary together. Both were hyper people in their own life. So, they clicked well.

The fact that they both had troubled lives. They were both running from something and the tried to cover up the emptiness with substance abuse of some form.

I think it was the compassion Duke had for Gary that drew him to Gary. He had made so many mistakes and his life had been a mess he did not want Garry to follow such dangerous path.

I think that their backgrounds, longing for a sense of beloging, and current predicament is what brought them together. At one time Duke was an alcoholic, yet Gary used to have a job that he lost due to not knowing who to associate with. I think that both thought that they could be each other's redemption.

I think Duke could see himself in Gary. That's one of the things that made them bond. And they both had similar challenges.

I don't think it is their vices. Sometimes life is a coincidence either you meet someone who has same similar personality or opposite.

Instead of a love for alcohol, I believe it was more of an addiction. Most addicts want to stop loving it, but they are unable to do so without help.

i think destiny brought Duke and Gary together as they have the same character and way of life. Gary needed a model at a certain point in his life, when he was disillusioned and need directions. He miraculously met Duke in a bar and they both connected spiritually.

I think they found something in themselves that both of them lack and that help soothe their situation. Gary was so confused and wanted to feel accepted and Duke made him feel that way. Duke himself had passion helping who felt they were not accepted by the society. Gary's confusion drew him to Duke.
