In an interview with Victor Rose, he mentioned that he hasn't read HP. I think the similarities are minor. HP has adults overseeing the kids. Here, the kids are on their own. I have no trouble seeing kids go for HP. I'm not sure I'll recommend this one to kids.

Unfortunately I have not read neither of these books but I promise to start the journey reading them.

I have not encountered the Harry Potter books, I have just sampled this book. But from what I hear about the Harry Potter Books, if anything was to be said, it would be that the author must have been inspired by the Harry Potter series.

My goodness, there is no comparison. The Harry Potter world is meticulously crafted. The main characters are developing all the time. The different folk (goblins, giants etc) are introduced with histories that make them different, but still accessible. You could not simply lop off all the heads of the goblins in Gringotts. They come across as people with recognisable attributes, so it would be wrong. Brimstone and his team wade through oceans of blood.

It's hard for someone to come up with something new.

They do say that what a person writes tells you more about the author than the story. Anything that happens to a writer whilst they are writing is bound to influence what they write.

I think there are many similarities but that doesn't take away from the merit of "End of the Last Great Kingdom" in any way. Let us remember they are part of the same genre and Harry Potter itself borrows from several other magical fantasies that came before it like the Lord of the Rings but still manages to be a magnificent text in it's own right. Same applies to Victor Rose.

Yes, the similarities were quite striking. They included:

- Wizard school complete with infirmary for recovering from magical injuries
- Forbidden forest in wizard school
- Magical duels
- Giant squid
- Division of soul into seven pieces
- The idea of buying magical implements from a specialist shop, and the way the bracelet "chose" Brimstone

There were significant differences too though. I wonder how many people know that Rowling was far from the first to write about a wizard school?

I think that while there are certainly similarities, there is nothing wrong with that essentially. I love the way this work draws strength from another work.

I was particularly interested in this forum topic as I have read Harry Potter for years but End of the Great Last Kingdom is unknown to me. I feel like your differing views between posts of have me interested enough that I must read it myself so I can throw my hat in the conversation

I agree with amybo's comment though....SOOOO many fantasy books share countless common themes, plots etc. I refuse to let that deter me from a fun read.

I think that they are two completely separate books. While it may seem like they have a lot in common, I think the number of differences that they have is a lot greater.

I agree. I think that books within the same genre may contain similar elements, but that doesn’t necessarily point to one author copying another.

Besides both books dealing with the concept of magic, I have not seen many similarities so far (I am still reading the book).

Harry Potter and End of the Last Great Kingdom may have the same subjects to offer, but they differ in myriads of ways. As though two similar dishes may be served differently, and that will be where the two would deviate. The storylines of the two books seem parallel, and so with the characters, and of course, it is just standard procedure for a satisfying story to end well, with the good guys having it.

I have not read harry potter. I am just now watching the movies and loving them. I only have one left so if this book is similar I just may need to read it.

There's no way to write a truly unique book that hasn't been inspired by anything else. This is literature, where everything is repeated and repeated. While these two books yield many similarities (and that's normal), there are also some distinct differences. But to sum it up, "End of the Last Great Kingdom" is a solely a product of Victor's mind and reflection of his thoughts.
