That's a good point. He did help the reader visualize the difficulty of the hiking and camping experience.

Would the story be different if the two of them weren't together? What if only Myra had went on the trip? Or only William?

Myrah is included in the book to prove that Sarah had a strong heart whereas William was just set to show how big the family was

They made the trip possible.
Yeah, it would have been impossible to go to the trip without William because he carried most of the luggage and it was also impossible to find another way to get away from the burning forest without Myra's help.

I think that both of them played an important role throughout the story.

It was an interesting part. If I was his age, I would be struggling a little bit too.
