Absolutely. Nations compete over things all the time, and almost always out of self-interest. Just look at what's going on in the South China Sea right now. I know it's not a project, but it's a similar principle. As long as there are power and greed, things like this will continue to happen. Since I don't see power or greed ever going away, I think that we'll always see examples of this.

Sadly, political corruption and power-hungry world leaders are all too common in modern times. Nepotism, embezzlement, and bribery are rampant in many countries (including developed countries). There are no limits to human greed and selfishness. Ethical concepts are often taught at universities but seldom practiced it seems.

I think we have if not the same, then similar problems in today’s life. I guess a lot of it doesn’t appear in the media, to avoid panic.
